Validations

    Tourists flying private in Iceland.
  • Visitors in Iceland holding valid and current foreign ICAO national pilot licences can for three months pilot aeroplanes registered in Iceland in Icelandic airspace, but only flying private VFR day. For Instrument flights PPL holders need a validation of their instrument rated licence, i.e. a temporary permission from the Icelandic Civil Aviation Administration to exercise the privileges of the foreign licence for IFR flights provided they have at least 100 hrs instrument flight time as pilot in command. They must pass a JAR-FCL skill test, pass JAR-FCL theory examination in Air Law, Aeronautical Weather codes, Flight Planning and Performance and Human Performance, hold R/T privileges and demonstrate the required knowledge of the English language and hold a valid relevant JAR-FCL Medical Certificate.

Validations of foreign professional pilot licences.
  • Professional pilots holding foreign national CPL or ATPL issued by non JAA states wishing to pilot aircraft registered in Iceland in commercial operations need a validation of their licences. Validation is a temporary permission from the Icelandic Civil Aviation Administration for the licence holders to use their foreign licences to pilot aeroplanes registered in Iceland. The validation must be carried with the licence. This validation is restricted to the operator who must apply for the validation and is only valid when flying for that operator. The minimum experience requirements for validation of ATPL for PIC are 1500 hours as PIC on multi-pilot aeroplanes and 1500 hours total in multi-pilot operations for copilots. The foreign licence must be valid and current. A JAR-FCL Medical Certificate must be obtained and JAR-FCL skill test passed. The applicant must also demonstate the required knowledge of the English language.
    See JAR-FCL 1.015 (b)(2) and Appendix 1 to JAR-FCL 1.015.

  • In special cases it is possible to issue a restricted temporary validation, without meeting the validation requirements, to permit flights to demonstrate, operate, ferry or test aeroplanes registered in Iceland.
    See Appendix 3 to JAR-FCL 1.015.
  • When aeroplanes registered in Iceland are leased to an operator in a non-JAA state it is possible to issue a letter of validation, “blockvalidation” for all flight crew members provided the state of the operator has accepted the responsibilty for technical and operational supervision of the aircraft in accordance with pertinent regulations.
    See JAR-FCL 1.015 (b)(3).
